/ð/ · /θ/

Where the tongue goes

Both sounds start the same way: the tongue tip rests lightly between the front teeth. The only difference is the vocal cords — buzzing for this, that, mother, silent (just air) for think, three, bath.

The throat-buzz test: put two fingers flat on your throat and say each word slowly. "That" makes your throat buzz the whole time. "Think" doesn't buzz at all until the vowel starts.

01

When to use which sound

The rules aren't 100% reliable, but this pattern covers most words. Each card has the rule in English and in Arabic (بالعربية).

rule 1Function word vs. content word

Voiced /ð/ — small grammar words: pronouns, articles, conjunctions, demonstratives.
Voiceless /θ/ — words that carry real meaning: nouns, verbs, adjectives.

this · that · they · them · the  |  think · three · thumb · mouth

الكلمات النحوية الصغيرة (كالضمائر وأدوات الإشارة) تُنطق غالبًا بصوت مجهور /ð/، مثل this وthat وthey. أما الكلمات التي تحمل معنى (الأسماء والأفعال) فتُنطق غالبًا بصوت مهموس /θ/، مثل think وthree وmouth. اسأل نفسك: هل هذه كلمة نحوية صغيرة، أم كلمة تحمل معنى؟

rule 2Middle of a word, between vowels

Usually voiced — but a handful of common exceptions stay voiceless.

mother · father · brother · weather  |  exceptions: nothing · something · healthy

عندما يقع حرفا th في وسط الكلمة بين حرفين متحركين، يكون النطق مجهورًا في الغالب، كما في mother وfather. لكن توجد استثناءات شائعة تبقى مهموسة، مثل nothing وsomething وhealthy — يجب حفظها عن ظهر قلب.

rule 3Verbs ending in silent "-the"

If the word ends in a silent "e" and it's a verb, it's voiced. Compare it to the related noun, which is voiceless.

breathe, bathe, clothe, teethe  vs.  breath, bath, cloth, teeth

إذا انتهت الكلمة بحرف e صامت وكانت فعلاً، فغالبًا تُنطق مجهورة، مثل breathe وbathe. أما الاسم المرتبط بها بدون e، مثل bath، فيُنطق مهموسًا. حرف الـ e الصامت هو إشارتك للتمييز بينهما.

rule 4Plurals can flip the sound

A few nouns switch from voiceless to voiced in the plural, because the sound blends into the /z/ ending.

mouth → mouths · bath → baths · path → paths

بعض الأسماء التي تُنطق مهموسة في المفرد تتحول إلى مجهورة في صيغة الجمع، لأن الصوت يندمج مع نهاية الجمع /z/. مثال: mouth (مهموسة) تصبح mouths (مجهورة)، وكذلك bath وpath.
